My first meeting with Shri Kumarpalbhai was quite chancey and an interesting one. I had gone to his residence with a view to purchase a set of books written by his father Shri Balabhai alias Shri Jaybhikhkhu. While guiding me as to how to go about it, Shri Kumarpalbhai was grace personified. That was almost three and a half decades ago.
Since then, of course, too much water has flown below the bridge. And then came a ‘Pitt the Younger’ on the scence, if I may use the analogy. This similie is not fully correct though. For this here Pitt has far more outgrown all the expectations. Ravindranath Tagore had a son who was extremely promising. In fact, Tagore was looking forward to be overtaken by him. That was not destined, unfortunately. The son died while still in his youth. Otherwise it was an appropriate case of ‘Shisyen Parajay Ichhayet’. In fact, Balabhai has been both happier and luckier in this respect.
My younger son had the pleasure of studying along with the elder son of Shri Kumarpalbhai. This also provided me an opportunity to know the family more closely.
As far as family values and familial bonds are concerned, Shri Kumarpalbhai fills the bill even at the level of the grandchildren. All the grandchildren are extremely fond of both the grandparents.
Whether it is sports, religion, attitudes, philosophy, Gujarati Vishvakosh, education or languages, he is quite comfortable in any sphere, irrespective of whether the words are printed or spoken.
As fas as interpersonal skills are concerned, he is capable of getting along well with almost anyone, whatever the age group. He also has the knack of putting at ease someone who is overawed in his presence. I have been a fortunate witness on several occasions. He has a rare knack of leading people while walking along with.
He can and does try to bring out the best in people. Why, for that matter, he can even tap and highlight such potential in someone who himself or herself may not even be aware of its very existence. I do not just think so. I know for sure. The self has been one such lucky beneficiary.
As far as Ahimsa is concerned, he has been able to influence the attitudes of many N.R.I.s, N.R.G.s and white Americans and Europeans. What with his extensive travelling, he has literarily shrunk the world, so to say.
As far as speeches are concerned, apart from his pleasantly gifted voice, he can speak on almost anything under the sun and hold interest of the audience comprising of any age group or any strata of the society. And all these, without having to refer to any note, whatsoever. His entry and exit both are attractive. Entry is usually with a very relevant anecdote and the exit also gracious enough, leaving the audience with a subtle message.
Some people believe in making the world a better place to live in.
Having known him has been a privilege. I feel justifiable proud, both as a Gujarati and an Indian.
